Pharmacists are experts in medicines who can advise you about many health problems and minor illnesses.
Talking to a pharmacist can save you a visit to your GP, and your pharmacist will tell you if he or she thinks you need to be be seen by your GP as well.
Some pharmacies provide extra services such as help with stopping smoking, emergency contraception, treating minor ailments, and supporting people with substance misuse problems.
Some also offer 'medical reviews' with a specially trained pharmacist who will sit down in private and discuss your medicines with you.

There is a charge (currently £7.10p) for each item on an NHS prescription although many people do not have to pay because of their age, income or medical condition. If you do pay, and have a lot of medicines on prescription, you will probably save money by buying a Pre-Payment Certificate.

Some medicines can be bought without a prescription. Ask your pharmacist if the medicine you have been prescribed is available ‘over the counter’ as this may be cheaper than paying the prescription charge.
