Take a Minute blog - Week 23, 27 March 2011

I had a letter this week to say that George’s weight is just in the overweight category. His height and weight were measured as were all reception children and his weight is in the 91st centile. Apparently anything between 91 and 97 is overweight.  It has really made me think about his diet. I don’t give him unhealthy food but I do give in when he tells me he is hungry and give him a piece of cheese or an extra bowl of cereal in the morning. I also think I may be giving him too big a portion at mealtimes and insisting he eats a certain amount. I am going to reduce the amount I give him and try and chill out a little. I am certainly not worried that he doesn’t exercise enough as he’s permanently running, dancing and wrestling.  We spent the best part of Saturday at Hove Park cycling, playing with our Frisbee and having a picnic.  It reminds me that I don’t need to go anywhere in the car or meet up with anyone or spend any money to have a lovely day enjoying my children.

Juicer

This week we have been mostly juicing…oranges. It feels so decadent, I associate the taste of freshly squeezed orange juice with upmarket hotels.  I do dilute it a bit with water.

Swimming

The elastic snapped on George’s goggles just before his lesson so I hastily tied a knot in them and stretched them over his head.  He can’t have been very comfortable because he had red rings around his eyes after his lesson but he didn’t complain.  James was taught rudimentary diving. I swam alongside the lesson at the key moment when he did his first dive.  It felt quite emotional for me as I have never had the courage to dive in and yet there he was at the age of seven doing it quite happily.  Swimming lessons have proved to be a major confidence booster for both my boys.

Badminton

We had our first AMEX/ARGUS sports and social event as chosen by Elizabeth last week, ten-pin bowling which was really good fun.  Jamie did manage to outplay us all making no allowances for the fact that some of the ladies were in their eighties and had never played before. Flo and the others did really well but I’m kind of hoping that no-one chooses martial arts as an activity!
