Take a Minute blog - Week 24, 3 April 2011

This week I picked up a nasty chest infection, and we saw STOMP at the Dome on Friday night. It was fantastic. There was even a scene with coughing as the rhythm which was appropriate.  I’m going to try out a clapping song I saw with my after-school music club today.

On Monday, I co-ran a prostate cancer cookery club which was an eye opener to me.  I hadn’t realised that prostate cancer often has no symptoms.  We cooked a tomato dish high in lycopene which is very beneficial.

I’m looking forward to the Easter break when the boys and I will be visiting my friend’s husband and his children in Falmouth.  It will be a visit tinged with sadness as I will be visiting some of the places I associate with my lovely friend Flo who died of bowel cancer at the age of 40.  She would have been really pleased to know that our children were still getting together every now and then.

Juicer

Our juicer has been idle this week. I wanted an easy life as I was feeling quite unwell.  We opted for water and milk. However I have planted some beetroot seeds for the first time and intend to juice them with oranges in the summer.

Swimming

I noticed that George seems to spend most of his time underwater in his lesson – emerging to gasp for air before disappearing again for a rather worrying amount of time. This may be due to the fact that he has a brand new pair of goggles that are comfortable and don’t slowly fill up with water!  James swam four lengths of the main pool last week which is amazing.  They love it and both cheer on a Wednesday morning when I tell them it’s a swimming day.

Badminton

Places are filling up on the AgeUK badminton club starting on Friday 6 May between 1-3pm at the King Alfred Leisure Centre.  Jamie has planned his lessons and I am waiting for the posters to arrive so I can spread the word.  If you would like a place, or know someone over 55 who might, then please contact  liz.smith@bhcpct.nhs.uk
