Help and advice
for people who lose their job

Help with stress and anxiety

Losing your job can be very stressful. You may feel angry, confused, uncertain or resentful. You may lose confidence and self esteem.
If you are out of work for a long time you may find it hard to stay motivated.

Good tips for coping with stress and anxiety are:

  • Talk to your family and friends about how you feel.
The people closest to you can be your biggest source of support if you let them.
  • Talk to a counsellor or therapist.
Your GP can refer you to one if he or she believes it will help.

Look after your health

  • Keep active
Physical activity gives you energy and a more positive outlook by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural anti-depressants.
  • Eat healthily
Eat fibre-rich foods such as wholemeal bread, fruit, vegetables and fish, and drink plenty of water.
  • Drink sensibly
Alcohol won’t solve emotional problems. Any effects quickly wear off and usually leave you feeling even worse.
  • Take time to adjust
Stress can have a real physical impact, so get plenty of rest and sleep.

If you have children, tell them what has happened

Children quickly pick up any signs of stress or anxiety, and can become stressed themselves if they don’t understand the reasons.
